&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;Tchaikovsky&#38;nbsp;&#60;/strong&#62;Symphony No. 6 (Path&#38;eacute;tique)&#38;nbsp;&#60;em&#62;&#60;a href=&#34;http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZw6faXXM9g&#34; target=&#34;_blank&#34;&#62;&#60;img src=&#34;http://www.bromleysymphony.org/mail/mail.cgi?f=show_img&#38;amp;l=news&#38;amp;id=20130506173249&#38;amp;cid=6f72672f696d616765732f617564696f2e676966audio.gif&#34; alt=&#34;Speaker symbol&#34; title=&#34;Click to hear a sample from a commercial recording of this work&#34; style=&#34;height: 13px; width: 15px;&#34; /&#62;&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/em&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;em&#62;The final concert of our season opens with the brilliant Festive Overture, a vivacious musical firework. Khachaturian's concerto is a magnificent whirlwind of powerful emotions and unbridled energy. The Path&#38;eacute;tique is a complex mixture of emotions &#38;ndash; sorrow, hope, and happiness tinged with a foreboding of despair &#38;ndash; a mixture that has ensured its enduring popular appeal.&#60;/em&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;/td&#62;
&#60;/tr&#62;
&#60;/tbody&#62;
&#60;/table&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Details of our exciting 2013-14 season are now on the front page of our web site, and&#38;nbsp;a new short video of the orchestra has been added at &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.bromleysymphony.org/about/&#34;&#62;www.bromleysymphony.org/about&#60;/a&#62;. As usual, existing season ticket holders will have the opportunity to keep their familiar seats if renewed before the end of June. This year we are also allowing seats for individual concerts (without the season discount) to be reserved at this time. Details will be on flyers at the May concert and on the web site afterwards. No payment is necessary at this stage.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Several people commented in our audience surveys that they would like to hear occasional smaller and earlier works performed. Bromley Symphony Players are a group of BSO members who do just that, and our next concert is on the preceding Saturday (11th May) in a lovely painted church in Bromley. Proceeds are donated to charity - on this occasion, Action Against Hunger. Our audiences tell us they enjoy these as much if not more than the larger symphony concerts, so please spread the word - they deserve a larger audience. A copy of the flyer is attached.&#60;/p&#62;

&#60;p&#62;&#60;em&#62;The Eighth Symphony is a monumental work, full of the composer&#38;rsquo;s characteristic &#38;lsquo;trade marks&#38;rsquo; but taking them further than ever before: a mysterious opening, dramatic climaxes and contrasts, a lively dancing scherzo, a heartfelt slow movement &#38;ndash; he believed it was his best one &#38;ndash; and finally a very powerful finale which brings it all together in a glorious blaze of triumph.&#60;/em&#62;&#60;/p&#62;

&#60;p&#62;&#60;em&#62;Suk&#38;rsquo;s Fairy Tale is a colourful suite of four movements drawn from music he wrote for a theatre piece. Mahler&#38;rsquo;s set of five songs, based on poems by Friedrich R&#38;uuml;ckert, share a mood of intimacy and quiet withdrawal. The Seventh Symphony, dramatic and darkly passionate and expressing the defiance of the underdog, is perhaps Dvoř&#38;aacute;k&#38;rsquo;s greatest.&#60;/em&#62;&#60;/p&#62;

&#60;p&#62;&#60;em&#62;Bax&#38;rsquo;s best known work paints a vivid picture of the Cornish castle of Tintagel, battered by the Atlantic on a sunny day. Elgar&#38;rsquo;s wonderful concerto, contemplative and elegiac, has become a much loved cornerstone of the cello repertoire. The symphony depicts various London scenes, including the Westminster chimes, hansom cabs, street sellers&#38;rsquo; cries, and the moods and tempos of our capital city.&#60;/em&#62;&#60;/p&#62;

		 <title>Two concerts featuring BSO members in September and October</title>
		 <link>http://www.bromleysymphony.org/mail/mail.cgi/archive/news/20120824120850/</link>
		 <description>
&#60;p&#62;Dear friends of &#60;strong&#62;Bromley Symphony Orchestra and collegues&#60;/strong&#62;,&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;A new season is not too&#38;nbsp;far ahead and I would like to advise you of two concerts outside the symphony orchestra's itinerary&#38;nbsp;that will be coming up in September and October, which you might like to attend.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Both concerts are at &#60;strong&#62;St.Mary's church, College road&#60;/strong&#62;,&#60;strong&#62; Bromley&#60;span id=&#34;Postcode&#34;&#62; BR1 3QG&#60;/span&#62; &#60;/strong&#62;and&#38;nbsp;both are on saturdays&#38;nbsp;at &#60;strong&#62;19:30&#60;/strong&#62;.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;&#60;span style=&#34;text-decoration: underline;&#34;&#62;&#60;br /&#62;&#60;/span&#62;&#60;/strong&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;&#60;span style=&#34;text-decoration: underline;&#34;&#62;The first concert&#60;/span&#62;&#60;/strong&#62;&#38;nbsp;is a piano trio concert &#38;nbsp;to be given by the &#60;strong&#62;GRATIA PIANO TRIO&#60;/strong&#62;&#38;nbsp; (Bernard Brook Vln, Noriko Matsumoto piano and Amanda Thorpe Cello)&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The concert is on the &#60;strong&#62;15th Sept&#60;/strong&#62;. and the program consists&#38;nbsp;of just two pieces:&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p style=&#34;padding-left: 30px;&#34;&#62;The 1st trio is by&#38;nbsp;&#60;strong&#62;SHOSTAKOVICH Op.67&#60;/strong&#62;; a dramatic and exciting work.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p style=&#34;padding-left: 30px;&#34;&#62;Interval (refreshments available)&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p style=&#34;padding-left: 30px;&#34;&#62;The&#38;nbsp;2nd by contrast, is the &#60;strong&#62;SCHUBERT Op. 100&#60;/strong&#62;, a typically tuneful piece and considered one of his masterpieces.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Ticket price is &#60;strong&#62;&#38;pound;7&#60;/strong&#62; at the door.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;&#60;span style=&#34;text-decoration: underline;&#34;&#62;The second concert&#60;/span&#62;&#60;/strong&#62; is another charity concert given by &#60;strong&#62;Bromley Symphony Players&#60;/strong&#62; on the &#60;strong&#62;13th October&#60;/strong&#62;.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;All proceeds will&#38;nbsp;go to the&#60;strong&#62; PSPA,&#60;/strong&#62; a charity giving support to those suffering from&#38;nbsp; &#60;strong&#62;Progressive Supranuclear palsy&#60;/strong&#62;, also those with &#60;strong&#62;Cortico basal degeneration&#60;/strong&#62;.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The program for this concert is as follows:&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p style=&#34;padding-left: 30px;&#34;&#62;&#60;strong&#62;Corelli&#60;/strong&#62; Concerto Grosso op 6&#38;nbsp;no.12&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p style=&#34;padding-left: 30px;&#34;&#62;&#60;strong&#62;Monn&#60;/strong&#62; Cello concert performed by &#60;strong&#62;Helen McDonald&#60;/strong&#62;&#60;/p&#62;

&#60;p style=&#34;padding-left: 30px;&#34;&#62;Interval (refreshments available)&#60;/p&#62;

&#60;p&#62;The ticket price for this concert is&#60;strong&#62; &#38;pound;6&#60;/strong&#62; on the door.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;I do hope you can join us&#38;nbsp;for these two exciting concerts.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Thank you.&#60;/p&#62;

		 <title>BSO news Message</title>
		 <link>http://www.bromleysymphony.org/mail/mail.cgi/archive/news/20120820001733/</link>
		 <description>
&#60;p&#62;Dear Concertgoer&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Great news! At last Bromley has a properly designed 500-seat concert hall, and not just a local hall that can also be used for concerts. Our orchestra was very fortunate in being able to perform there in May, earlier than planned, because of the difficulties of last season when we were unexpectedly forced to relocate three of our concerts. This new hall is superb, with excellent acoustics and facilities, and good sightlines from all parts. The enthusiastic feedback we have had from our audience showed that they loved it and all our concerts this season will be there.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;img style=&#34;width: 320px; height: 213px;&#34; src=&#34;http://www.bromleysymphony.org/mail/mail.cgi?f=show_img&#38;amp;l=news&#38;amp;id=20120820001733&#38;amp;cid=616765732f6c616e676c65795f7061726b5f68616c6c2e6a7067langley_park_hall.jpg&#34; alt=&#34;Langley Park Hall&#34; height=&#34;213&#34; width=&#34;320&#34; /&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;As always, we have a great and very varied programme of music. A completely English programme opens the season including Elgar&#38;rsquo;s well loved Cello Concerto with a rising international soloist and recording artist, Jamie Walton. The other two items in the concert are both pictures in sound: Bax&#38;rsquo;s evocation of the Cornish castle Tintagel, battered by the Atlantic on a sunny day, and Vaughan Williams&#38;rsquo;s London Symphony, which depicts many of the sounds and moods of our capital. This concert is dedicated to the memory of Malcolm Smith, who was a loyal supporter of Bromley Symphony Orchestra for over 60 years and who was very well known and respected in the professional music world.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The main item for our January concert is Dvoř&#38;aacute;k&#38;rsquo;s Seventh Symphony, often regarded as his greatest. But we open with Suk&#38;rsquo;s &#38;lsquo;Fairy Tale&#38;rsquo;, a colourful suite from music written for a theatre piece. Suk was Dvoř&#38;aacute;k&#38;rsquo;s son-in-law and his music shows many of the same Czech influences. This is followed by Mahler&#38;rsquo;s R&#38;uuml;ckert Lieder, a set of five songs based on poems by Friedrich R&#38;uuml;ckert and sharing a mood of intimacy and quiet withdrawal.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;In March, we play only one work, Bruckner&#38;rsquo;s Eighth Symphony, originally planned for last season. What a symphony it is &#38;ndash; on the grandest scale! In turn it is mysterious, dramatic, dancing, passionate, and finally gloriously triumphant. Bruckner always loved the sound of the horn, but for his last three symphonies his horn section is augmented with four Wagner tubas, essentially large bore horns invented by Wagner, giving a wonderfully enhanced warm sonority to the brass. Bruckner&#38;rsquo;s symphonies have often been described as &#38;ldquo;cathedrals of sound&#38;rdquo; and this one could represent St Peter&#38;rsquo;s in Rome, the world&#38;rsquo;s largest cathedral.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The season ends with an all-Russian programme, opening with Shostakovich&#38;rsquo;s brilliant &#38;lsquo;Festive Overture&#38;rsquo;, a real musical firework. Bernard Brook, who has led BSO until last season, will be the soloist in Khachaturian&#38;rsquo;s Violin Concerto, a piece full of intense feeling and unbridled energy. Finally, Tchaikovsky&#38;rsquo;s last and most powerful symphony, the &#38;lsquo;Path&#38;eacute;tique&#38;rsquo;, completes our season. Its popular appeal is indeed immortal, displaying, as with all Tchaikovsky&#38;rsquo;s great work, a complex texturing of emotions &#38;ndash; sorrow lightened with hope, and happiness tinged with a foreboding of despair.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;We hope that you share in our enthusiasm, not only for this season&#38;rsquo;s choice of music but also for Bromley&#38;rsquo;s splendid new concert hall, and that you will come to our concerts. Why not buy a season ticket? It gives you 25% discount &#38;ndash; 4 concerts for the price of 3. If you cannot attend all four concerts, you could give your spare tickets to friends to introduce them to Bromley&#38;rsquo;s premier orchestra.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;So put these concert dates in your diaries and book now at &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.bromleysymphony.org/tickets&#34;&#62;www.bromleysymphony.org/tickets&#60;/a&#62;. Delay and you risk disappointment. Even now, we have already sold over 250 season tickets. We look forward to seeing you.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Yours sincerely&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;em&#62;John Carmichael&#60;/em&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;BSO Publicity&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;PS &#38;ndash; Please do spread the word about us. There are still far too many local people who appreciate classical music but do not even know we exist. And please encourage your friends and relations to come to our concerts.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;PPS &#38;ndash; Mailing lists get out of date, so please let me know if you no longer wish to be on ours. But do let us have details of any of your friends who would like to be added to our list.&#60;/p&#62;

						Dear Concertgoer,&#60;/p&#62;
					&#60;p&#62;
						Tiered seating at last! Our next concert will be our first at the exciting new performance hall at Langley Park School for Boys, a little earlier than originally planned due to unavailability of the Ravensbourne hall. As the new hall has a completely different seating plan with excellent sightlines and facilities, seats within each area will be unnumbered for this May 2012 concert only, which will give you the opportunity to familiarise yourselves with the hall&#38;rsquo;s layout and to decide your preferred seating area for next season. Stewards will direct you to the appropriate areas. Note that some seats in the front row of the stalls and last row in the circle are reserved for people with mobility problems since they have step-free access, with a lift to the circle level.&#60;/p&#62;
					&#60;p&#62;
						There is a map below to help you find the new hall by car or public transport. Eden Park station and the 358 bus are very close. Parking is available opposite the hall in Hawksbrook Lane as directed by stewards, pending completion of the hall carpark.&#60;/p&#62;

							&#60;em&#62;Rossini&#38;rsquo;s overture is very well known, not least for its galloping finale which became the &#60;/em&#62;&#38;lsquo;Lone Ranger&#38;rsquo;&#60;em&#62; theme music. Music for strings from Walton&#38;rsquo;s &#60;/em&#62;&#38;lsquo;Henry V&#38;rsquo;&#60;em&#62; film music calms things down. Strauss&#38;rsquo;s love for the horn shines though all his orchestral works, and particularly in this late concerto which needs a real virtuoso soloist. We conclude our season with this wonderful symphony, which has been a mainstay of the orchestral repertoire ever since it was written.&#60;/em&#62;&#60;/p&#62;

						&#60;p&#62;
							&#60;em&#62;Borodin&#38;rsquo;s wonderful music is very widely known, much of it having been adapted for use in lighter and popular genres, notably in the musical &#38;lsquo;Kismet&#38;rsquo;. For Beethoven&#38;rsquo;s most well loved piano concerto, we are delighted to welcome back Masa, whose previous appearances with us met with such enormous acclaim. Bart&#38;oacute;k certainly puts the various sections of the orchestra through their paces in his showpiece concerto, a true 20th Century classic.&#60;/em&#62;&#60;/p&#62;

		&#60;em&#62;For 2012, the Queen&#38;rsquo;s Diamond Jubilee year, we open with Walton&#38;rsquo;s 1937 coronation march. The poignant &#60;/em&#62;&#38;lsquo;Sospiri&#38;rsquo; &#60;em&#62; (sighs) cools the mood, ready to be revived by Arnold&#38;rsquo;s jazzy concerto, originally written for Benny Goodman. In 1830 Berlioz took the musical world into new realms with his vivid picture of passionate but unrequited love that eventually turns into a wild nightmare.&#60;/em&#62;&#60;/p&#62;

	&#60;p&#62;
		Dear Concertgoer&#60;/p&#62;
	&#60;p&#62;
		Happy New Year! I had not expected to write so soon, but I bring you some bad news, some good news &#38;ndash; and some even better news.&#60;/p&#62;
	&#60;p&#62;
		The bad news is that in early December, we learned that the Great Hall at Ravensbourne School, our regular concert hall since at least the 1950s, would not be available to us for our January or March 2012 concerts. This has obviously caused us some headaches in seeking to find somewhere else in Bromley for these concerts at such short notice.&#60;/p&#62;
	&#60;p&#62;
		The good news is that not so far away the Ravens Wood School, in Oakley Road, just off Bromley Common, has just completed construction of a new hall. We have held one of our orchestra rehearsals there to confirm that it is suitable for us, and some orchestra members have also attended Bromley Youth Music Trust concerts and can confirm that the audience experience in the hall is good. So our next two concerts will take place in this hall and not at Ravensbourne School.&#60;/p&#62;
	&#60;p&#62;
		Our&#38;nbsp; original published programme for March had included Bruckner&#38;rsquo;s Eighth Symphony, but we have decided that the slightly drier acoustic of the Ravens Wood hall would not show this magnificent work at its best since Bruckner&#38;rsquo;s musical style always benefits from a degree of resonance. Therefore we have decided to postpone the Bruckner symphony until our 2012/13 season when we can do it full justice and therefore to change the March 2012 programme. We have been most fortunate in that the superb pianist Masa Tayama, who received such an ecstatic response from our audience on both the recent occasions he performed with us, is available on this date to perform Beethoven&#38;rsquo;s most well known piano concerto, the &#38;ldquo;Emperor&#38;rdquo;. This will be coupled with the Overture and Polovtsian Dances from &#38;ldquo;Prince Igor&#38;rdquo; by Borodin, whose music has been so often plundered for use in lighter popular genres - eg &#38;ldquo;Stranger in Paradise&#38;rdquo;, &#38;ldquo;Bau
bles, Bangles and Beads&#38;rdquo; and the musical &#38;ldquo;Kismet&#38;rdquo;. He could really write good tunes! The other item on the programme is Bartok&#38;rsquo;s great &#38;ldquo;Concerto for Orchestra&#38;rdquo;, a true 20th Century classic which really puts the various sections of the orchestra through their paces.&#60;/p&#62;
	&#60;p&#62;
		The even better news is that we have decided to move the final concert of the season in May to the brand new Legacy Hall, Bromley&#38;rsquo;s first ever purpose designed concert hall. Its construction is due to be completed this month. It was designed with specialist acoustical consultants and has fully tiered seating for the audience, giving an excellent view of the orchestra from all seating areas. We had previously planned to move our concerts to Legacy Hall in November 2012, but performing the May concert there will give you an earlier opportunity to see the hall and decide where you would like to sit for future seasons.&#60;/p&#62;
	&#60;p&#62;
		Writing to you now also gives me an opportunity to let you know about an extra event we have just planned for June at Legacy Hall: our summer workshop. These workshops are when the orchestra assembles for a day to work on something special which we might not otherwise get a chance to play. The day concludes with an informal performance in the early evening, and audiences may attend this at no charge, although a collection is made to help us recover some of our costs.&#60;/p&#62;
	&#60;p&#62;
		The work we have chosen is amazing and virtually unknown, since although completed in 1880, it was only rediscovered in1989. It is the Symphony in E by a fellow student with Mahler, Hans Rott, who unfortunately went mad shortly after finishing it and died at the early age of 25. Mahler greatly admired this symphony, and his own symphonies, the first of which was written 8 years later, show strong influences. If you appreciate Mahler&#38;rsquo;s music you will enjoy Rott&#38;rsquo;s Symphony. It&#38;rsquo;s well worth hearing.&#60;/p&#62;
	&#60;p&#62;
		This marks an exciting new era for BSO and we look forward to seeing you at our concerts.&#60;/p&#62;
	&#60;p&#62;
		Yours sincerely&#60;/p&#62;
	&#60;p&#62;

		For Bromley Symphony Orchestra&#60;/p&#62;
	&#60;p&#62;
		PS &#38;ndash; You may like to know that you can hear a very good complete performance of Rott&#38;rsquo;s Symphony on &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNep21n90yk&#34;&#62;www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNep21n90yk&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;

					&#60;em&#62;We celebrate Liszt&#38;rsquo;s 2011 bicentenary with one of his great tone poems. Barber&#38;rsquo;s well-loved Adagio was originally part of his second string quartet. But we begin and end with Elgar. This march is less familiar than the famous No 1, but no less memorable. The Violin Concerto, premiered in 1910, gained immediate popularity and has remained a firm favourite on concert programmes ever since. &#60;/em&#62;&#60;/p&#62;

				&#60;p&#62;
					&#60;em&#62;This Schubert symphony has remained one of the most well loved in the concert repertoire in what seems a perfect unfinished state, though others have tried to complete it. Creston&#38;rsquo;s Concertino is distinctly tonal in the modern American idiom and possessed of a strong rhythmic sense. Sibelius&#38;rsquo;s Second is by far the most popular of his symphonies. Its style is characteristic Sibelius, with marvellous dark-hued sonorities, expansive brass chorales, passionate expressiveness, and at the end, with screwed up tension leading to a glorious triumphant conclusion. &#60;/em&#62;&#60;/p&#62;

					&#60;em&#62;The opening item comes from Walton&#38;rsquo;s music written for the 1942 film &#60;/em&#62;&#38;lsquo;The First of the Few&#38;rsquo;&#60;em&#62;. Sibelius&#38;rsquo;s only concerto, in turn stormy and tense, quiet and lyrical, and with a dazzling dancing finale, demands forceful dramatic playing from the soloist. Nielsen&#38;rsquo;s Fifth, widely regarded as his greatest masterpiece, portrays conflict with disturbing but exhilarating power: the contrast between darkness and light, ominous militarism and peace, evil and good, which eventually leads to an affirmative conclusion. &#60;/em&#62;&#60;/p&#62;

					&#60;em&#62;Rimsky-Korsakov&#38;rsquo;s &#60;/em&#62;Capriccio Espagnol&#60;em&#62; captures the warmth and exuberance of Spain in brilliant technicolour, a free rhapsody based on folksong tunes. The Strauss concerto uses only a small orchestra and provides a wonderful showcase for our principal oboist. Stravinsky&#38;rsquo;s charming ballet depicts the colourful atmosphere of the Shrovetide Fair and draws on Russian folk melodies to tell the story of a puppet unsuccessful in love. &#60;/em&#62;&#60;/p&#62;

					&#60;em&#62;After Beethoven&#38;rsquo;s tensely dramatic overture and Berlioz&#38;rsquo;s elegant romance, we celebrate Mahler&#38;rsquo;s 150&#60;sup&#62;th&#60;/sup&#62; anniversary year with the vast musical canvas and emotional scope of his Fifth Symphony. Its moods include grim and funereal, savage and angry, ebullient and dancing, lyrical and romantic, and finally radiant and triumphant. Its famous adagietto has become particularly well known through its use in Visconti&#38;rsquo;s classic film&#60;/em&#62; &#38;lsquo;Death in Venice&#38;rsquo;.&#60;/p&#62;

		 <description>

                    &#60;p&#62;&#60;em&#62;Kabalevsky&#38;rsquo;s sparkling overture brilliantly captures the  			carefree moods of an exuberant hero in the mould of Till  			Eulenspeigel and Robin Hood. The Tchaikovsky concerto was famously  			rejected by its original dedicatee Nikolai Rubinstein as being  			worthless, unplayable and vulgar. How very wrong this has proved to  			be! Ever since its premiere in 1875 it has been overwhelmingly  			popular with audiences &#38;ndash; and a challenge for pianists. Prokofiev&#38;rsquo;s  			celebrated ballet is so full of the most wonderful tunes and  			orchestral colour that it is a pity that time does not allow us to  			play it all, but only a generous selection. &#60;/em&#62;&#60;/p&#62;

        &#60;p&#62;We hope to see you there!&#60;/p&#62;
